Martin Scanlon RIP

Martin Scanlon RIP

Martin Scanlon RIP

It is with profound sadness that we learned of the death of our Club President, Groundsman & Caretaker Martin Scanlon on Wednesday 31st October. Martin was Emmets Groundsman and Caretaker for twenty five years. He took on the role after being proposed by the late Tim “The Horse” Kennelly and passed at one of the many late night meetings held in Kennelly’s Bar before being ratified at the actual club meeting. Martin took over the position from Anthony Greaney, and Moss Sullivan held the position before that, so he was in good company and took to the role with the best of his ability. Before Martin took on the role the club relied on Eric Browne’s sheep to keep the grass cut so the move was on to get things done and Martin was our man.

When Martin took a break earlier this year we only began to notice the amount of work he used to do, it now takes four of us to do what he did at his ease!

Martin took immense pride in the pitch and facilities at Frank Sheehy Park, he was king of all he surveyed and was a tremendous help to The Allman’s, Sean, Tadhg, Stephen, Con & the development committee during the various stages of our redevelopment and minded  the place as if it was his own child. If anyone had something to say about the place or a bad word you would know about it later! It was always Martin’s way or no way because he knew everything about Frank Sheehy Park and what needed to be done. He kept the club looking its best at all times and for that we are eternally grateful.

To Martin’s family his wife Kathleen and son Andy, his grandchildren and great grandchildren we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathies. Martin will forever remain in our thoughts and prayers, Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a anam uasal.
